Guwahati: A college girl in Guwahati, Assam was allegedly cyber-stalked and harassed by a man who created and circulated lewd photos of her and her friends online.
Guwahati Police through its crime branch team arrested the accused Bilal Hussain after a month long investigation.
According to the police, the incident started in September 2023 when the victim, along with a few of his friends, started receiving unsolicited calls and messages to all students of the college.
The accused, who identified himself with various aliases including Nabajit Nath and Nabajit Talukdar, sent obscene messages and morphed the photos.
He even threatened the girls with dire consequences if they revealed his identity.
The investigation revealed that Hussain had befriended one of the victims online, posing as someone else. He gained her trust and even took control of her WhatsApp account for a period.
However, upon discovering his real identity, the victim and her friends cut off communication with him.
This enraged Hussain, who then resorted to creating and circulating the morphed pictures.
“Based on technical analysis and human intelligence, the accused was traced to Bangalore, Karnataka,” informed police in an official statement.
“He was identified as Md Billal Hussain, a resident of Dhula, Assam, who was deliberately concealing his true identity”, police shared.
The Crime Branch team tracked Hussain down to his hometown in Dhula, Darrang where he was arrested on April 24, 2024.
He “confessed to his crimes”, and the police have recovered his mobile phone and SIM cards used in the harassment.
Hussain has been produced before the court and remanded to police custody for five days.
