Manipur police, forest dept destroys over 100 hectares poppy fields

Imphal: In a major crackdown on illegal poppy cultivation, a joint team of Assam Rifles, Police and Forest Department destroyed over 8 hectares of poppy plantations in Sihai and Khamasom villages of Ukhrul district in Manipur.
This brings the total area under illegal poppy plantations in the district to 101 hectares since the new campaign against illegal poppy cultivation was launched on November 8, 2023, officials said.
A defense statement said that Assam Rifles under the auspices of Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South) assisted in the destruction of illegal poppy cultivation spread over 8 hectares (approx) in Ukhrul district on November 23, 2023.
The operation is part of the “War on Drugs” campaign, launched by the Manipur government to eradicate poppy cultivation from the state.

The destruction of illegal poppy plantations is a major step forward in the fight against drug trafficking and addiction in Manipur.
