Fresh protests erupted along the Assamโ€“Nagaland border in Golaghat on Monday after members of the Naga community erected a concrete gate in Chungajan and designated it as part of Nagalandโ€™s Niuland district. The gate, reportedly named โ€œShokhuvi,โ€ was constructed on the road connecting Navamilanpur and No. 2 Shantipur villages under the Sarupathar sub-division. Locals claimed the structure was an attempt to assert Nagalandโ€™s presence on Assamโ€™s territory.

Residents of Navamilanpur, Mahima, and surrounding areas staged demonstrations demanding the removal of the gate, citing repeated appeals to the Assam government that went unheeded. Villagers alleged that the Nagas have been adopting aggressive measures to occupy Assam land, while Assamese voices received little support. Protesters also expressed concern over perceived bias by the CRPF, claiming that objections raised by Nagas faced no action, whereas Assamese residents were threatened and pressured to withdraw complaints.

Border Magistrate Priyamjyoti Phukan and Sarupathar Sub-Divisional Police Officer Dipen Pator visited the protest site, where demonstrators submitted a memorandum urging the immediate removal of the gate. Local leader Dipen Gogoi described theย Assamโ€“Nagaland border disputeย as long-standing and increasingly critical, recalling that about a month ago, Nagas had allegedly set fire to 95 houses. He warned that, with assurances on land pattas and border resolution repeatedly unfulfilled, the BJP government must act before the upcoming elections, or locals would consider alternative measures.

Gogoi also criticised the lack of political representation, saying elected MLAs had failed to voice concerns in the Assembly, leaving local grievances unaddressed. The latest protests follow earlier tensions in December 2025, when clashes and armed attacks on Assamese villagers nearย Merapaniย reignited fears over security and encroachment along the inter-state boundary. Locals said the alleged attempt to incorporate Assam land into Nagaland has further heightened anxieties, prompting organised demonstrations in the Chungajan Majgaon Panchayat area.
