According to organisers, Kalachand DIET is the only institution in Dima Hasao district offering B.Ed and D.El.Ed courses. However, allegations have surfaced that local students are being sidelined in favour of candidates coming from outside the district. This has prompted the student bodies to demand full reservation for locals.
Uttam Langthachai, President of the All Dimasa Student Organisation, said 258 local students applied for admission, but only 14 were given seats, while the remaining seats were allotted to outsiders. He added that such exclusion of local students had not occurred in previous years.
The student leaders also pointed out that they had held three meetings with the DIET principal on August 7, 11, and 14, followed by another meeting on August 20 with the Joint Director of the ACERT, Guwahati, to press their demand for 100% reservation. Despite repeated appeals, no solution has been provided so far.
Langthachai emphasised that for teaching in the Dimasa language, Assamese, and Boro-medium schools in Dima Hasao, local candidates need to pursue B.Ed and D.El.Ed courses. โWe are from poor, farming families and cannot afford to go outside the district for education. Hence, 100% reservation at Kalachand DIET for local students is necessary,โ he said.
He warned that if the state government or North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council fails to address the issue, the student organisations will continue their agitation.
