The situation in Litan area of Manipurโs Ukhrul district remained volatile on February 10, with reports of gun firing and fresh incidents of arson despite sustained efforts by the government and security agencies to restore normalcy.
Violence entered its third consecutive day on Tuesday morning as alleged gunfire and arson were reported from the area, officials said. Security forces have been put on high alert, and additional deployments have been made to prevent further escalation.
On February 9, a team of legislators led by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho visited Litan to assess the ground situation. The team held meetings with leaders of both communities and appealed for restraint to help restore peace. The deputy chief minister assured that those involved in the arson would be identified and arrested.
BJP MLAs Govindas Konthoujam and Kh Ibomcha said various security measures had been taken to bring the situation under control. They added that additional forces were deployed and dialogue was initiated with community leaders to stop the violence.
The violence reportedly erupted on Sunday night following an alleged physical altercation between two intoxicated individuals from the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities on Saturday night. The Tangkhul Naga individual was allegedly assaulted by a group reportedly belonging to the Kuki community, triggering arson and subsequent unrest.
