Churachandpur district in Manipur witnessed heightened tension on Thursday, as protests erupted in the Tuibong area against the formation of the newly installed “popular government.” The situation remained volatile throughout the day, leading to the heavy deployment of security forces to prevent further escalation.

According to sources, unrest began early in the morning, driven by widespread anger over Kuki MLAs extending support to the popular government. Protesters accused the elected representatives of acting against community sentiment, particularly amid ongoing demands for a separate administrative arrangement.

Demonstrators maintained a firm stance, declaring that they would not accept the popular government until their demand for separate administration is fulfilled. Tensions intensified after the government was formed in the presence of several Kuki MLAs, including Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, along with L.M. Khaute and Ngursanglur Sanate. Many protesters viewed this move as a betrayal of community aspirations.

The agitation took a dramatic turn when two protesters allegedly attempted self-immolation as a form of protest. Timely intervention by police personnel prevented the incident from becoming fatal. Despite the heavy security presence, the situation worsened later in the evening, with sporadic scuffles reported around 6 pm.

While authorities managed to avert major casualties, several protesters reportedly sustained injuries during the clashes. As of the latest updates, the situation remains tense, with security forces continuing efforts to restore full control in the area.

It may be recalled that sections of the Kuki community had earlier warned Kuki MLAs against supporting the popular government if it were formed. Thursday’s developments underscore the deepening political and social divisions in the region, unfolding against an already fragile security backdrop.
