Yearender 2022, several filmmakers from the Northeast, especially from Assam, have managed to make a mark in the national and international arena with their critically acclaimed films. These filmmakers have made the region proud with their outstanding achievements. Here is a list of eight films – six from Assam and two from Manipur – that made a name for themselves in the Northeast in 2022.

Semkhor

The Dimasa-language film Simkhor, which ran into a major controversy for allegedly ‘misrepresenting’ Dimasa culture, won the Best Actress category at the Toronto International Women’s Film Festival and the 20th Dhaka International Film Festival Award. (2022) won several awards including the Special Audience Award. . Directed by Amy Baroah, the film also won the National Film Awards under two categories: Special Jury Mention and Best Feature Film at Dimasa. Based on the traditions and livelihood of the ‘Simsas’, a remote community of Dimasa in the Semkhor region of Assam’s Dimahasau district, the film drew the ire of the Dimasa community for its ‘stereotypical representation’ of the Dimasa.

Bridge

Kirpal Kalita’s Assamese film Bridge, which depicts the story of loss, despair, hopelessness, and grief around a bridge, won the Best Assamese Film (Rijat Kamal) Award in the Feature Film category at the 68th National Film Awards. . The 125-minute long film gained popularity when Shiva Rani Kalita, playing the lead role of Junaki, won the Best Debut Actor award at the recent Ottawa India Film Festival.

Manas aru Manuh

Manas Aru Manoah (Manas and People), a documentary directed by Deep Bhuyan, won the Rajat Kamal Award for Best Environmental Film in the Non-Feature Film category at the 68th National Film Awards. Produced by Assam Forest Department, Directorate of BTC, and Biodiversity Organization ‘Arniak’, the film tells the conservation success story of Assam’s Manas National Park. The 26-minute film tells the story of how the park is important for maintaining the cultural significance of local Bodo and other communities.
