Working to make crematorium pollution-free: Agartala Mayor
Agartala: Mayor Deepak Majumder said that local bodies (ULBs) in Tripura are working to convert existing firewood based crematoriums into gas or electric powered mechanisms to reduce pollution.
As part of the initiative, Majumdar said, “The largest electric crematorium is being set up at Battala crematorium in the city center of Agartala. The cremation ground will be inaugurated by Urban Development Minister Santana Chakma on Wednesday.
“This is the first time that such a facility is being set up in the city. A total of 14 bodies can be cremated in the crematorium built for the purpose. The last rites will be performed without air pollution. If the Municipal Corporation has taken the initiative to modernize all the cemeteries under its jurisdiction, ”the mayor added.
According to Majumder, preliminary work has already started in Chinahihani and Mohanpur. Regarding existing facilities, he said, “We are also working to develop existing gas-fired furnaces with state-of-the-art technology. In the case of gas-fired furnaces, to cool it after the last rites.” Some time is required. But in electric kilns, such cooling down period is not required. In addition, less time is required for last rites, “he added.
Praising the role of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Majumder said, “Under the able leadership of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, work under Agartala Smart City Mission is progressing at a fast pace. Agartala Municipal Corporation and Urban Development Department, Agencies like the government of Tripura are working hard to ensure that people in urban areas get all the services they deserve.
