Imphal West: Protesters on Sunday condemned the alleged brutal attack by 22 Assam Rifles on two village volunteers, one of whom was in a critical condition and was being treated in hospital.
The two victims have been identified as one Pukhrambam John, 35, son of late P Binoy and Ningthoujam Romeson, 30, son of N Hero both from Awang Wabgai under Sekmai police station, Imphal West.
In an effort to defend the border area of Imphal district and the village of Awang Leikinthabi in Kongpokpi district from attacks by Kuki militants, villagers have set up bunkers in the Nongpok Ninghthuou mountain range and volunteers are taking turns guarding the village. On Sunday at the Awang Leikinthabi Ground.
He alleged that on Saturday, personnel of 22 Assam Rifles attacked the two volunteers when they tried to retrieve their vehicle which they left in the hill range.
Ph Priyokuma said two volunteers went to the hills when it was reported that the Assam Rifles personnel were on the hills thinking it was out of danger.
However, he was detained by the Assam Rifles personnel and allegedly brutally assaulted. He added that after the District SP, Imphal West, Kangpokpi, Officer-in-Charge Sekmai Police Station reported to the Commander of Assam Rifles, he was released the same day.
After the two volunteers were released, John’s health began to deteriorate on Sunday night. Priyokumar added that he was admitted to Sekmai Health Center and later referred to Raj Medicity.
The committee strongly condemned the act of Assam Rifles and will file an FIR against 22 Assam Rifles and fight in court, he said that the committee will fight till justice is served and if necessary, they will knock on the door of the Supreme Court.
The protesters carried placards that read, “No two separate administrations in Manipur”, “Implement NRC in Manipur”, “Withdraw SoO agreement with Kuki militants” and others.
The protest was held under the banner of “Condemnation of 22 Assam Rifles for physical attack on Metiei civilians” and “Withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Manipur immediately”.
