Women in viral video says Police was there but did not intervene

Imphal: The two Kuki women who were victims of the painful parading incident in Manipur claimed that the police were present at the scene but failed to intervene or help.

One of the survivors said that the Manipur police was present during the harrowing ordeal but did not help them.
Another female survivor corroborated the claim, saying that she saw four policemen in a car who simply watched the violence without taking any action to help them.

It wasn’t just abuse and assault on women, the father and brother of one survivor lost their lives in a mob attack.
The incident, which took place in Kangpokpi on May 4, comes amid escalating ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in the state.
Survivors said that before the attack, residents of Be Phenom village in Kangpokpi had been warned by their Meitei neighbors about the impending approach of the Mighty Mob.

Kuki villagers tried to flee the village but the families of the two women captured in the video failed to escape and were brutalized by the mob.
The official complaint filed with the police revealed that the Meitei mob was armed with sophisticated weapons during the attack.

Recalling the horrific experience, one of the survivors said that the assailants took them to a secluded area, where they were surrounded and brutally tortured.
She mentioned one of the attackers calling for more people to join the violence.

Amidst the fear, the survivor admitted that some members of the Meitei community tried to help them.

While some people urged them to take off their clothes.
Adding to the complications of the situation, internet has been down in Manipur since May 3.

This may be the reason for the delay in the circulation of the video on social media platforms.

While the incident dates back two months, not much was said by the Indian Prime Minister about the entire situation in Manipur.
But, after the video went viral and the monsoon session of Parliament began, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first statement.

He said that 140 crore Indians faced shame due to this incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep “sorrow” in his address and promised that the culprits would face the full force of the law.
PM Modi said his heart was “full of pain and anger” after the incident.

“What has happened to the daughters of Manipur can never be forgiven”, he added.

The Prime Minister further assured that justice will prevail and no culprit involved in this heinous crime will be spared.
He also urged all the Chief Ministers of the country to ensure strict maintenance of law and order in their states.

It may be noted that on Thursday, the main accused, identified as Heradas (32), was arrested from Thoubal district.

He was traced based on a viral video in which he was wearing a green T-shirt.
