Woman cop assault row, Congress seeks action against CEM KAC

Guwahati: Debabrata Saikia, leader of the opposition in the Assam assembly, has called for immediate action against Gokul Barman, the chief executive member (CEM) of the Kamtapur Autonomous Council (KAC), following allegations of assaulting a woman police constable.

Saikia addressed the issue in a letter to the Assam women’s commission chairman on Tuesday (May 21).

Saikia’s letter details that Barman, leveraging his political influence, allegedly assaulted and sexually abused a woman police constable, who was reportedly his romantic partner.

The incident occurred on May 10, leading to the constable’s hospitalization in Dibrugarh, Assam.

Saikia highlighted that no action had been taken against Barman.

He urged the state women’s commission to prompt the Assam director general of police (DGP) to take a statement regarding the assault.

Additionally, Saikia demanded the immediate withdrawal of all government perks and benefits provided to Barman.

He called for a detailed inquiry, including the collection of Barman’s call detail records and a comprehensive forensic examination of the incident.

The controversy centres around Barman, who is married, and his alleged altercation with the woman police constable, with whom he is purportedly having an extramarital affair.

The constable, originally from Boitamari in Bongaigaon district of Assam, required medical attention following the altercation.

In response to the accusations, Gokul Barman denied any involvement in the incident.

However, Hiteshwar Barman, president of the Kamtapur Autonomous Council, has called for an official inquiry into the matter.
