Will Assam Chief Minister investigate ‘false’ FIR against Mevani: Chidambaram
New Delhi: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Saturday slammed state police for filing a “false FIR” against Gujarat Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani in a court in Assam. He asked if the Chief Minister would hand him over. The CBI was trying to find out who the “crazy person” who lodged the FIR was.
While allowing bail to Mevani for a situation connected with the asserted “attack” of a female cop, a court in Assam’s Barpeta region on Friday took out state police for recording a “misleading FIR”.
Hearing the bail application, Barpeta District and Sessions Judge Aparesh Chakraborty also asked the Guwahati High Court to direct the state police force to “reform itself”, citing several police encounters during the past year.
Reacting to the development, Chidambaram said the court found that no sensible person could have intended to provoke the courtesy of a female police officer in the presence of two male police officers.
The court found no evidence that Mevani was a lunatic, the former interior minister said in a series of tweets.
“If Mr Mevani was not insane and yet a false FIR has been lodged against him, then there must be someone who was insane?” They said.
