Guwahati: Pro-Khalistan leader and head of separatist group “Wars Punjab De” – Amritpal Singh was brought to Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail amid tight security on Sunday (April 23).
He was taken to Dibrugarh in Assam in a special flight from Bathinda Air Force Station after his arrest by the Punjab Police on Sunday (April 23) morning.
A special plane carrying Amritpal landed at Dibrugarh Airport (in Assam) at 2:20 pm. After necessary formalities, he was taken to Dibrugarh jail in a security convoy with 12 cars around 3:20 pm,” an official said.
Punjab Police arrested Amritpal Singh after he surrendered before the police at Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sant Khalsa in Rode village.
He has been arrested under the National Security Act (NSA).
Apart from Amritpal, nine other associates of the Waris De Punjab group are also lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail and have been charged under the stringent NSA.
WHY BRING AMRITPAL TO DIBRUGARH?
The real reason behind Amritpal Singh’s transfer to Dibrugarh in Assam is still unknown.
However, it is believed that safety and security in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail is one of the main reasons for bringing Amritpal Singh to Assam.
Dibrugarh Jail in Assam is a British-era jail, built in 1859-60.
Dibrugarh Jail in Assam is the most secure jail in Assam and also the oldest jail in the entire North East.
It was used to house top ULFA leaders during the organization’s peak insurgency years.
According to an HT report, the Punjab government initially thought of sending Amrit Pal’s aides to Delhi’s Tihar Jail, but since the Delhi jail houses many Punjabi goons, even some separatists, the government sent them to Assam. Decided to send.
It is also being said that due to the tight security arrangements, it will be difficult for any prisoner to escape from the prison.
Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail has been transformed into a maximum security jail in recent times.
CRPF personnel and Assam Police commandos are guarding the jail round the clock.
