Tura: Meghalaya Government Nursing Services Association (MGNSA) and Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA) have condemned a video that allegedly took place at Shibbari PHC on April 20. An incident has gone viral in which some local residents got heated. Discussion with staff nurses of PHC.
The video, which was apparently taken by one of the debaters, later surfaced online along with various social media channels, leading the nurses to face severe criticism from various quarters.
However, the Nursing Association said that the viral video was not only one-sided but also portrayed nurses in a negative light due to memes and songs meant to make fun of nurses.
A press note from MGNSA and MMSA condemned the information spread by social media channels.
“They should have consulted us on this matter because the clip being shown is only part of the story. They did not verify the facts and just posted the video. It has brought the nursing professionals into disrepute and mentally ill. Harassment has been done. We would like to make it clear that many people have made comments and rude remarks against us with the nefarious intention of spoiling our relations with the public. We tolerate such remarks towards our profession. will not and will stand as one,” said MGNSA president, JCK Sangma.
According to PHC staff, the incident happened like this.
On the evening of April 20, two persons, including a child, came to the emergency department of the PHC for care and were given medical attention. However, since none of the PHC emergency departments had equipment to test the blood, they were checked and asked if they wanted to remain in the PHC for monitoring. He refused and was sent home with the prescribed medication.
However, after some time, a group of locals came to the PHC and started questioning the actions of the PHC staff against the two patients, alleging that they were only given ORS and treated themselves.
“We showed them the prescription and the issued medicine and also told them that we had asked them to stay back but they preferred to go home. However, they were angry with us and accused us of neglecting the patients. Later in frustration, the staff said something about education itself after which the discussion went viral,” said a nurse on condition of anonymity.
The next day, a complaint was lodged with the police by the PHC staff following which the same people who had argued with them came to apologize and compromise. However, one of them made the video viral through a status post on social media.
“Despite performing our duties to the best of our abilities, we are facing a lot of unnecessary criticism. We will stand up to such bullying and want all these videos spread on social media to be taken down immediately. Be removed,” the source said.
Another police complaint on the matter is expected to be filed by the medical department tomorrow, May 1.
