Vanlalvena Rajya Sabha MP urges Modi to probe Manipur clash

Aizawl: Mizoram Rajya Sabha member K Vanlalvena has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form a joint parliamentary team to probe the recent communal violence in neighboring Manipur.

In a letter to the prime minister, Vanlalvena urged that a joint parliamentary team, including MPs from the Christian minority, be formed to conduct an independent investigation into all episodes of violent clashes.
“I request that a joint parliamentary team, including Christian MPs, be formed and sent to the affected areas to conduct an independent investigation into the entire chain of events to find out the truth and deliver justice. can be done.” The Mizoram MP said in his letter.

Although the situation in Manipur is returning to normal, there is a strong possibility of such violence reoccurring unless an honest and sincere attempt is made to analyze the sequence of events and the pattern of violence perpetrated by the perpetrators.
Vanlalvena alleged that during the mob violence in Imphal, Manipur, more than 42 churches, including 6 belonging to Meiteis Christians, were torched, besides houses, shops and vehicles belonging to the tribal community were given.
“It is clear that the seemingly random act of violence was not a sudden outburst of anger by one community against another, but rather a calculated and premeditated act to specifically target the Christian community, including the indigenous Meitei Christians. It was a thought-provoking move, which shook one of the basic tenets of our constitution – ‘secularism,'” he said.

He said incidents of violence and arson took place in more than 49 tribal habitations as well as in a large number of towns and areas dominated by the Meiteis.
Mizoram also alleged that four civilians, including two women, were shot dead by security forces in Churachandpur town on May 5 when protesters protested against the move to relocate displaced non-tribals to Imphal.

He said the protesters had demanded that the displaced tribal people, who are staying at several army bases in Imphal, should also be shifted to safer places in the hilly area.
Meanwhile, the situation in the violence-hit neighboring state is improving, with no fresh reports of violent clashes and untoward incidents in the past four days, officials said.

Curfew has also been relaxed in all 11 districts, he said.

Manipur Chief Minister N Baran Singh told reporters on Monday that 60 people have been killed and 231 others injured in the communal violence that has rocked the northeastern state for the past few days.

He said thaprt more than 1700 houses, including religious places, have also been razed to the ground.
