US ready to assist on Manipur violence if asked, Ambassador Eric

Imphal: US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti expressed concern over the violence and killings in Manipur, calling it a matter of “humanitarian concern”. During a press conference in Kolkata on July 6, Garcetti conveyed the readiness of the United States to assist India in dealing with the situation if requested.
He also appreciated Kolkata’s multi-religious nature and expressed interest in promoting investment in eastern and northeastern parts of India.
Speaking about the situation in Manipur, Garcetti stressed the need for peace and prayed for the region. He said that America sees this issue not only as a strategic concern but as a matter of humanitarian concern.
Acknowledging the progress made in India’s northeast and eastern regions, Garcetti emphasized that peace is essential for further progress. After peace is established in Manipur, the US is ready to provide support, projects and investments.
Garcetti highlighted the challenges faced by democracies, saying that protecting the rights of minorities is a complex task even in the United States. He highlighted the importance of upholding democratic principles, including majority rule and the protection of the rights of all individuals.
The ambassador expressed America’s commitment to these values ​​in his country and in India. Garcetti recognized that sustaining democracy requires sustained efforts and open dialogue, while respecting India’s sovereignty to determine its course.

During his visit to Kolkata, Garcetti highlighted the strategic importance of the Northeast, which shares borders with five neighboring countries. Garcetti acknowledges Kolkata’s historical and intellectual legacy, citing notable figures such as Rabindranath Tagore, Mother Teresa, Satyajit Ray, Saurav Ganguly, and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He appreciated the inclusive spirit of the city and the vibrant celebrations of various festivals.
Garcetti emphasized the importance of deepening the relationship and understanding between the US and India. During her visit to Kolkata, he interacted with various stakeholders, including youth leaders, women leaders, students, business, academia, civil society and the press.
