Urgent solution of Naga political issue is necessary, Nagaland CM

Kohima: Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio acknowledged the concerns raised by various speakers regarding the urgent need to foster a peaceful atmosphere in Nagaland and to reach a logical and peaceful conclusion to the Naga political issue through a spirit of compromise.

He recalled that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) has consistently provided ample time for discussion during each session and has passed resolutions advocating for an early and peaceful resolution of the Naga Political Issue.

Rio expressed optimism that the collective efforts of the assembly will yield positive outcomes, stating, “We anticipate witnessing the ultimate and peaceful resolution of the Naga Political Issue during the tenure of this House.”

Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio underscored the significance of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) for the people, particularly those residing in border areas, describing it as a ‘serious’ matter.

Rio assured that the Nagaland government is fully cognizant of the situation and has corresponded with the union government regarding this issue.

Following widespread concerns arising from the central government’s announcement to suspend the FMR and propose border fencing, Rio affirmed that the Nagaland government has conveyed its apprehensions to the central authorities.

The Nagaland government has urged the Centre to continue the FMR and develop regulations in consultation with the affected communities in border regions.

Rio emphasized that such collaborative efforts would enable the incorporation of everyone’s concerns and ensure the formulation of FMR arrangements beneficial to all parties involved.

These remarks were made during the conclusion of the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s February 26 address, initiated by Moatoshi Longkumer and seconded by Sethronkyu.
