Aizawl: Security has been beefed up ahead of a state-wide solidarity protest by major civil society organizations in Mizoram, police said.
The NGO Coordination Committee, a conglomerate of five major civil society organisations, including the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) and Mizo Zarlai Pawl (MZP), will stage a massive demonstration across the state on Tuesday to express solidarity with the ethnic Zoroastrians in riot-torn Manipur and condemn atrocities on tribal people.
An important meeting chaired by Mizoram DGP Anil Shukla was held on Sunday to review security arrangements and deployments, the police said in a statement.
The meeting also reviewed the measures taken to ensure safety and security of Meitei in different parts of the state, the statement said.
Shukla directed the police officials to ensure proper deployment, patrolling and vigilance in all districts especially in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents.
He stressed the need for sufficient number of reserve forces with vehicles and officers for quick deployment and response in case of any incident in their areas.
A team of DGP and senior police officials also visited and inspected the places in Aizawl where the procession will be taken out on Tuesday.
The state police is closely monitoring the situation along with the administrative officials.
Senior police officers and all police personnel on the ground are working diligently to ensure the safety and security of Manipuri in various parts of Mizoram, the statement said.
Underscoring their commitment to protect all citizens and maintain communal harmony, the state police appealed to all civil society organizations, NGOs and the general public to help them maintain peace and harmony.
Despite security assurances from the state government, around 80 Meiteis left for Manipur on Sunday through various flights, an official said.
A total of 78 Meiteis living in Mizoram have returned to Manipur in three flights on Sunday, said Civil Aviation Principal Consultant J. Lalhmingliana.
On Saturday, 65 Meitei people returned to Imphal after being advised by an ex-militant outfit to leave for their “own safety”.
At least 31 Mizo students have also returned to Mizoram due to the prevailing situation in the neighboring state after a video showing two Kuki women parading naked went viral, Lalhmingliana said.
He said that according to a report in a section of the media, there is no arrangement for special flights for Meiteis yet.
