Aizawl: The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday said it will strongly oppose any move to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and will collectively appeal to the people of the state. Appealed to oppose.
Earlier on Tuesday, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Mizoram Kohhran Heritage Committee (MKHC), a group of leaders of major churches, wrote to the Law Commission of India objecting to the implementation of the UCC in the country.
Mizoram Congress chief spokesperson and former Rajya Sabha member Ronald Sapa Tlau told reporters in Aizawl that MPCC president Lalsawta, now in New Delhi, had sent a letter objecting to the UCC to the Law Commission of India. will be presented.
He said that the move to legislate UCC should be opposed by all the people of the state.
“It is important that all people collectively object to this in order to protect and preserve our cultural and religious identity,” Tlau said.
The UCC refers to a common set of laws relating to marriage, divorce and inheritance that will apply to all Indian citizens irrespective of religion, tribe or other local customs.
The Law Commission had on June 14 launched a fresh consultation process on the UCC by seeking views from stakeholders including the public and recognized religious organizations on the politically sensitive issue.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga wrote to the Law Commission of India on Tuesday that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is “against the interest of ethnic minorities in general and the Mizos in particular.”
Zoramthanga, who is also the president of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), said his party believes the UCC contradicts the religious and social practices of the Mizos and their traditional laws, which are enshrined in Article 371 of the Constitution ( G) .
“Since the proposed implementation of the UCC throughout the territory of India is in conflict with the religious and social practices of the Mizos and their customs/personal law which are specifically protected by constitutional provisions, the said NDA Government at the Center As a suggestion. Seen in the Law Commission notice cannot be accepted,” Zoramthanga, written by his party, said in his letter.
The MNF is a constituent of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) and an ally of the NDA at the Centre.
The MKHC had also written to the Union Law Commission that it strongly opposed the implementation of the UCC in the country.
In its letter, the committee claimed that the UCC is detrimental to unity in the diversity of Indian culture, religions and customs and is undermining the rights and privileges of the Mizos enshrined in Article 371(G) of the Constitution.
