Umiam Dam water level 'lowest in the history' says AT Mondal

Shillong: The water level in Meghalaya’s Umiam Dam is at its lowest in history. This information was given by Meghalaya Energy Minister AT Mondal on May 16.

He also said that if the water level in the reservoirs decreases further, the Umiam power plant in Meghalaya will also be shut down.

“The water level (in general) is the lowest in history. We are now at 3,165 feet, which is the lowest,” Meghalaya Energy Minister AT Mondal said.
The Meghalaya power minister added: “If it goes down another foot, we will have to shut down Umiam (power plant) as well. That is the bet.”

“There is an allowable water level limit to which we can run our units, so if it goes down, naturally we have to close the dam,” he said.

However, Meghalaya’s energy minister expressed hope that the situation would improve with the arrival of monsoon in the region in the coming days.
Meghalaya’s Energy Minister AT Mondal made the statement on Tuesday (May 16) after visiting Umiam Dam along with experts from IIT-Guwahati.

He also informed that Umiam Bridge in Meghalaya will also be reconstructed after evaluation and recommendation by experts from IIT-Guwahati.

“We have visited Umiam Dam. Everything looks fine on physical verification. There is no problem,” Meghalaya Energy Minister AT Mondal said.
“But still we have decided that the IIT should take steps to check the exact condition of the bridge using various testing methods,” he added.

“Based on the recommendations of the experts, we will go for rebuilding the bridge,” the Meghalaya power minister said.

He also informed that vehicular traffic will be diverted for a day, which is yet to be decided, as the Umiam Bridge will be repaired.
