Guwahati: Two youths were allegedly beaten up by villagers at Dhekiajuli in Assam’s Sonitpur on Wednesday night after they extorted money from a local using the name United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I).
According to sources, both of them demanded Rs 7 lakh from a local named Dalong Mampha.
They even beat Mampha and threatened him with a gun.
The two men, identified as Baloram Basumatary and Jajiya Narzary, claimed to belong to the banned militant outfit ULFA-I, but police sources said the fact was being probed.
Basumatary hails from Dhekiajuli and Narzary hails from Kokrajhar.
Mumpha, who lives in Panbari area of Dhekiajuli, was asked to pay Rs 7 lakh by both of them, but as he was unable to pay, they assaulted them.
However, on Wednesday, they again visited the area to demand money but were caught by locals who beat them up before calling the police.
Both the accused were detained by the police and the gun used by them was seized.
