Dibrugarh: Security forces have arrested a staunch ULFA (I) cadre from Noglo village under Lazu circle of Arunachal Pradesh’s Tarap district.

The arrested cadre has been identified as self-proclaimed Sergeant Major Biju Bugti alias Priobrat Asom (29), a resident of Dibrugarh.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of ULFA (I) cadre, security forces launched an operation and nabbed the hardened rebel on Wednesday, sources said.
A security official said that the arrested Biju is an active cadre of ULFA (I) and had sneaked into Indian territory from the outfit’s Hachi camp in Myanmar.

According to reports, the cadre was trying to reach the Arunachal-Assam border by crossing the Indo-Myanmar border on Wednesday, at a time when extortion is on the rise in the region.

Sources said he had come to extort money from ULFA (I) overground operatives after which a joint team of security forces spotted a suspect moving towards Noglu village from the Indo-Myanmar border.

He was challenged by the security forces when he tried to escape.

The joint team immediately searched the area and nabbed him from one of the jhum huts, where he has taken shelter.

On Wednesday morning, an encounter broke out between security forces and ULFA (I) activists at Pingri in Tinsukia district of Upper Assam.

A ULFA (I) linkman identified as Amit Mukhya (29) was injured in the gunfight and admitted to hospital for treatment.

The incident took place around 4.50 am, when security forces entered the forest area in search of ULFA (I) activists.
