ULFA (I) Claims Responsibility
Guwahati: The outlawed ULFA (I) has claims responsibility for an attack on an army patrol party in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district on Tuesday.
In a statement emailed to the media on Tuesday, the ULFA (I) said the ambush, codenamed ‘Operation Lakhipathar’, was carried out on the occasion of ‘Protest Day’, which the freedom fighter outfit 28 Celebrates November.
During an area control exercise, an army team was ambushed on Pengeri-Digboi road in Barpathar area on Monday morning.
ULFA (I) freedom fighter detonated an IED on the leading Mine Protection Vehicle (MPV), and fired about 20-30 rounds.
The army claimed no casualties except for a punctured tyre, and in the retaliatory fire, at least one ULFA(I) cadre was “severely injured as blood was found in the forest area”. It is evident from the peels”.
A joint operation with the state police was launched in the area soon after the incident, using tracker dogs and special equipment, but no further contact with the freedom fighter could be made, an army spokesman said.
He said that the fleeing militants left behind a remote device, batteries, wires and food.
On the other hand, ULFA (I) claimed that an MPV was damaged in the attack and several security personnel were injured.
The freedom fighter outfit did not mention any injuries to its workers.
ULFA (I)’s ‘Day of Protest’ marks the launch of ‘Operation Bajrang’ by the Army against the freedom fighter outfit in 1990.
