UGC's draft policy to de-reserve seats oppose by Garo body
Shillong: A.chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) on Monday opposed the UGC’s draft policy, which proposes to declare reserved posts for SC, ST, and OBC candidates as “unreserved” if those categories Candidates are insufficient.
The organization expressed reservations and criticism over the move, prompting them to send a letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to register their displeasure.
Opponents say the move could end the current quota system and reduce opportunities for historically disadvantaged communities. To fully understand the seriousness of this issue, it is important to consider the historical context of reservation policies in India.
Affirmative measures were introduced to address social injustices, discrimination and disparities in a caste-ridden society. The purpose of the reservation system is to uplift the marginalized communities, providing them with educational and employment opportunities that were historically denied to them.
However, reservation policies 2 have faced constant scrutiny and debate regarding their effectiveness and fairness. It said critics argue that although the initial intention of affirmative action was noble, over time, it has resulted in unintended consequences, including the perpetuation of caste identities and accusations of tokenism is included.
According to the organization, the UGC’s proposal to make seats unreserved has fueled debate, with concerns that it could undermine the essence of affirmative action and block opportunities for historically marginalized communities.
A major concern is the lack of attention to address the systemic issues that hinder adequate representation of SC, ST, and OBC candidates. Rather than deserving seats, a more holistic approach is needed to examine the factors contributing to underrepresentation.
It said this could include addressing issues such as inadequate basic education facilities, socio-economic disparities, and institutional biases that hinder the development of the disadvantaged.
Expressing strong opposition to the move, the organization warned that it would create several challenges and issues including undermining of social justice, caste identity and discrimination, political manipulation, and stressed on Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. It asked them to review this decision.
