Two advocates promoted as Guwahati HC judge by Supreme Court
Guwahati: The Supreme Court Collegium had on October 17 recommended the appointment of two senior advocates Unni Krishnan Nair and Kaushik Goswami as judges of the Guwahati High Court.
The names were initially recommended by the Guwahati High Court Collegium on May 29. The decision was taken after consultation with the constitutional authorities of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram and Nagaland and the Supreme Court judges familiar with the cases of Guwahati High Court. The input of the Union Department of Justice was also considered.
All four advisory judges unanimously gave a positive opinion for Nair, despite the DoJ’s possibly negative observation about his personal integrity.
However, the collegium recommended his elevation, citing his high professional income and extensive practice as evidenced by the number of reported decisions.
Goswami also received positive feedback from the advisory judges, and his integrity was not challenged. The Collegium then recommended his name for the post of Judge of Guwahati High Court.
