Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday took to the streets against the exorbitant hike in prices of fuel, cooking gas and essential commodities.
Congress workers burnt motorcycles and set fire to empty gas cylinders while protesting against the hike in petroleum prices, which is burning a hole in the pockets of common people.
All India Congress Committee national secretary Szaritha Laitphlang led the protest and criticized the BJP government at the Center for the declining purchasing power of the common people.
After the Modi government came to power, the prices of essential commodities increased dramatically. Cooking gas, petrol and diesel, which are among the basic needs of the people, are going beyond the purchasing power,” Laitphlang said.
He said that the youth of the country must play a leadership role to raise their voices against these issues and make the government listen to the voice of the people.
TYPC President Rakho Das referred to Union Minister Smriti Irani’s protest against the UPA government over gas cylinder prices.
“In 2014, the price of cooking gas was a little over Rs 400, then the current Union Minister Smriti Irani took a cylinder on her head to protest against it and now when her party was voted in, LPG Cylinder prices hit Rs 1300. Adding to the woes, GST is being levied on food items.
“The ruling government has strategically pushed the people of the country into an uncertain future,” Das added.
