To launch NRC Manipur Student bodies agreed on joint committee

Manipur: In an effort to launch a swift movement for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur with collective efforts, student organizations on April 12 decided to form a joint coordinating body, where representatives of all ethnic communities of the state Will participate.
The decision was taken after a one-day consultative discussion on the implementation of the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur held on April 12 at the City Convention Centre, Imphal East.
The debate was jointly organized by six major student organizations namely All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), Manipuri Students Federation (MSF), Democratic Students Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Kangleipak Students Association (KSA), Students Union of Manipur. Kangleipak ​​(SUK) and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Singpanglup (AIMS).
Representatives of all the communities living in the state including Naga, Kukis, Nepali, Telli etc. and various civil society organizations were present in the discussion.

At the end of the discussion, resolutions were passed unanimously paving the way for the implementation of NRC at the earliest.
These resolutions are to pressurize the state government to take all necessary steps for the implementation of NRC in Manipur, to endorse the movement started by any organization or association regarding the implementation of NRC, Emphasis should be placed on the formation and operation of a complete organization. Formation of Population Commission and Joint Coordination Committee as soon as possible to collectively initiate the movement for NRC implementation.
Delivering his keynote address, DESAM President, Leishangthem Lamyanba said that implementation of NRC in Manipur is the need of the hour. Many illegal immigrants came to Manipur after the state abolished the entry-exit permit system in 1950.
The population is growing at an alarming rate. Every decade the population is increasing by about 25 percent in the valley and 40 percent in the hill district. Besides, many new villages are coming up. The people of the state and the government should take these changes as a serious concern, he said, adding that there is a need to know to create awareness about the imbalance of population which is a serious threat to the indigenous population of the state.
He added that a consultative discussion was held to pave the way for implementation of NRC without affecting or harming any community.

Former Manipur Human Rights Commission Chairperson Khaidem Mani was the moderator of the discussion, who assured all possible efforts to implement NRC in Manipur.
