To improve weather forecasts IMD signed MoU with CESHS

Itanagar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) and Arunachal Pradesh’s Center for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance meteorological observations in the hill state.

Center for Earth Sciences and Himalayan Studies (CESHS) is an institute under the Department of Science and Technology of Arunachal Pradesh.
During a program organized in Itanagar on the occasion of World Environment Day, Arunachal Pradesh Government’s Science and Technology Department Secretary Repo Ronya and Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) under IMD Scientist-G and Head KN Mohan Signed the MoU.
As part of the agreement, around 100 AWS/ARGs (Automated Weather Stations/Automated Range Stations) will be installed by IMD with the help of CESHS in the state.

It was also informed that the IMD will also install three X-band Doppler weather radars in the state which will help enhance surface weather observations.
A weather forecast with an impact-based advisory will be issued to users across the state. This will establish a mutually beneficial relationship based on scientific cooperation between the two parties.
“This is an important step towards scientific cooperation. The agreement aims to promote personnel training, knowledge transfer, data sharing, and scientific research programs,” said Union Minister for Earth and Science Kiren Rijiju, who Witnessed the signing ceremony at MOU, said.
“The people of Arunachal Pradesh will benefit from accurate weather forecasts and warnings with increased meteorological observations in the state,” Rijiju said.
Arunachal Minister for Science and Technology Honchun Ngandam expressed happiness that the state will have a better weather observation network. He assured the IMD of all possible support from the state to carry out the works of installation of meteorological observatories.
“As part of the MoU, both institutions will undertake joint research and development in the field of meteorology and allied disciplines, knowledge transfer and information/data sharing in the fields of weather, monitoring and forecasting of extreme events, to carry forward the mission of K. their respective organization,” said Dr. Sanjay O’Neil Shaw, Scientist-F, RMC, Guwahati.
