To disperse protestors in Imphal, security forces used electric shock
Imphal: A tense situation unfolded in Manipur as security forces resorted to using electric shock devices to disperse protesters, resulting in several injuries.
The incident occurred in the Cheirap court complex of Imphal West district during clashes between demonstrators, predominantly women from Imphal East district, and law enforcement personnel.
After initial scuffles, security forces, including the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Manipur police, deployed electric shock devices to disperse the protesters, who were demanding the immediate release of six individuals arrested in connection with an arms looting incident.
These arrests had sparked the protest.
The injured, including seven women, a journalist, and a lawyer, were promptly rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The demonstration erupted following the court’s decision to remand the arrested individuals into judicial custody for 15 days.
The Manipur government has initiated a magisterial inquiry into the arms looting case, implicating seven personnel from the 5th India Reserve Battalion.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Bar Association has vehemently condemned the use of force by security forces within the court complex, calling it unconstitutional and demanding accountability for those responsible.
