To address issues related to school HYC asks education minister

Shillong: The alleged shortage of school teachers and the presence of substandard schools, especially in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district, led the Hani Wittrip Youth Council (HYC) on Friday to demand the Education Minister to take necessary steps.
HYC members, led by their president Roy Kupar Synrem, apprised the Education Minister of the problems related to education in West Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi district.
The HYC president said that in West Khasi Hills, there are about 90 government lower primary schools in the district, with about 50 to 100 or more students in each school.
In such schools, the government appoints either 1 or 2 teachers to teach the students, and these teachers have to cover all the classes from nursery to fifth grade. ”

We have demanded immediate recruitment. The minister has assured us that it will start from next month,” Synrem said.
Non-availability of teachers as per student-teacher ratio has affected the education sector in the entire district and is a grave injustice to the students enrolled in these schools, the HYC noted.
They have also demanded that the existing government school buildings which are dilapidated need immediate intervention for repairs and other works.

“If not addressed, majority of these schools will not be able to cater to the students in the coming session. Therefore, we urge you to take immediate and urgent steps in this regard,” Synrem said.
