New Delhi: Citing the Centre’s claim in the Supreme Court that if states could consider granting Hindu minority status, Trinamool Congress MP Shanta Chhatri on Friday demanded in the Rajya Sabha that the community in Meghalaya be given a minority status. Be rated

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in the House, Chhatri said the Center had told the Supreme Court that states could consider granting minority status to Hindus if the community was not in the majority in their jurisdiction.

He said that if Hindus are in the minority in a particular state then they should be able to set up and manage the educational institution of their choice keeping in view the rights conferred on the minorities by the constitution as per the Center.

Chhatri said, “I humbly request the August House to draw the attention of the Home Minister so that the Meghalaya government can immediately declare Hindus a minority through a notification in accordance with Articles 29 and 30 of the Constitution of India.” Be instructed to give status.
