Tinsukia: Locals torched a car in Assam’s Tinsukia town after an auto driver died in a road accident on Monday.
The situation is now under control, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Abhijit Gurav said, adding that enough police and CRPF personnel have been deployed to deal with any emergency.
An auto driver was killed on the spot and three others were injured in a collision between an auto and a Suzuki Swift car in Guijan area on the outskirts of Tinsukia.
The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Krishna Milli. The injured have been admitted to Civil Hospital in Tinsukia.
Gurav said the police had identified and detained 16 people involved in the violence and burning of the vehicle. One Arup Baruah of Dinjoy Satra was driving a Swift car when it collided with an autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction. On receiving information about the accident, the police swung into action and rescued the car driver and passengers from the clutches of some miscreants who attacked them.
“The miscreants outnumbered the police at that time and set the Swift car on fire,” he added.
“In such times, we expect people to come forward and help the victims and not indulge in violence,” he said, adding, “The driver and passengers of the vehicle are safe. The police are investigating the matter. And the law will take its course in both cases of accident and violence.
