Aizawl: Mizoram is yet to receive any response from Assam on its proposal to postpone the third round of border talks between the two neighboring states, a senior Mizoram home department official said on Monday.
The border talks were scheduled to take place on November 4 in Guwahati.
Mizoram Home Department Additional Secretary Lalharitpuya said they had sent a written request to Assam last week urging them to postpone the border talks in view of President Draupadi Murmu, who will visit the state on November 3 and 4. are visiting
He said that he has proposed negotiations from November 9 to 11.
“We have not yet received any response and information from Assam about the date of the meeting on the border dispute,” Lalharetpoya said.
He said that the Assam government will finalize the new date.
Apart from the President’s visit, Chief Minister Zoramathanga also expressed apprehensions that Home Minister Lachamalyana, who is leading the Mizoram delegation, would not be able to accompany him along with Land Revenue Minister Lalruwatkema or Forest Minister TJ Lalantalonga, both of whom While on an out-of-state visit. , if the talks take place on November 4, the official said.
He said that if there is a delay, Lalruwatkima can participate in the negotiations.
Mizoram shares a 164.6 km long border with Assam.
In efforts to resolve the border dispute, delegations from the two states have met twice in Aizawl and held virtual meetings on five occasions in July last year after a violent clash in which seven people, including six policemen from Assam, were killed.
More than 60 people were also injured in the clash, which took place in a disputed area on National Highway-306 near Verangte village in Mizoram.
Chief Minister Zormathanga and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma also met twice in New Delhi in November last year and September this year to find a peaceful solution to the contentious border dispute.
