Illegal Purchase of Vehicles
Shillong: The Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to bring to book the culprits involved in illegal purchase of vehicles to recover public funds.
“It is hoped that the entire matter will be monitored at a high level to ensure that the misappropriated public funds are recovered and the culprit or culprits are brought to book,” the court said in a PIL. He said while listening.
The High Court said that the report annexed to the affidavit filed by the State Home Secretary has indicated that appropriate steps have been taken so far, including the charge sheet.
The advocate general also said that the accused has sought some documents and has been given time to file his written statement in response to the charge sheet.
“It is hoped that the inquiry will be conducted as expeditiously as possible and without causing undue hardship to the department or the culprits,” it said.
The State further submitted that appropriate steps will be taken to ensure that the assets of the accused are frozen as the principal is estimated to be over Rs.3 crore.
The court has also decided to drop the contempt proceedings against the home secretary as the state is taking the matter seriously which it demands.
The next date of hearing of the case is November 25.
Meanwhile, SF-10 Battalion Commandant Meghalaya Police Officer GK Iangrai was arrested by the CID on Wednesday for his alleged involvement in the purchase of 29 vehicles, some of which were undocumented.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong confirmed the arrest.
“Action has been taken. We are guided by the law and the rules. The law prevails and we will let the law take its course. Office procedures will have to be followed and the officer will be suspended,” he said. .
