Assam-Arunachal flood water
North Lakhimpur: Flood water has entered the power house of NHPC’s 2,000 MW Subansiri hydro project under construction on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, officials said on Monday.
A company source told PTI that a part of the temporary protective wall of the power house collapsed on Sunday night when the Subansiri river started flooding after heavy rains in upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh.
“It was a temporary wall, which we would have removed after completing the work on the power house. However, the breach occurred prematurely,” he said.
One unit of the project, which is said to be India’s largest hydroelectric project so far, has been commissioned, while work on the other unit was underway when water entered the building.
“We will now have to dewater the premises. After that, cleaning will be done as the floor will be very dirty. Work on the power house will be delayed by four to five months,” said another official.
He also said that the loss is considered a threat to the ongoing final phase of the construction of the power house.
A landslide damaged a diversion tunnel of the project on Friday. Officials said that no one was injured in the incident.
