New Delhi: The Assam government is considering reducing water levels in rivers by constructing reservoirs near rivers during the monsoon season, state Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika said here on Friday.

The state government, on the initiative of Chief Minister Humanta Biswa Sarma, is considering a comprehensive project to reduce water in rivers during the monsoon by constructing nearby reservoirs, he said in a meeting with Union Hydropower Minister Gajinder Singh Shekhawat here. He later told reporters.

He thanked the Union Minister for releasing Rs 125 crore to the state from the Flood Control Fund, which had been idle since 2016 due to various irregularities between 2011 and 2016 during the Congress rule in the state.
He requested Shekhawat to release more funds under this scheme for launching new projects in the coming days to deal with the floods in the state.
