Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has lauded the stance taken by the Thadou Convention in support of National Register of Citizens (NRC) update in Manipur, calling it a right step for bringing peaceful coexistence among the various ethnic communities in the State.
Addressing a press conference today at its office at Imphal West’s Lamphelpat today, COCOMI coordinator Somorendra Thokchom emphasized that unity among ethnic communities is vital to counter external threats.
“Manipur can successfully thwart any external force if the ethnic communities residing in the State have taken up similar initiatives like the Thadou community”, he said.
The coordinator also cited past disruptions to the State’s peaceful coexistence and integrity while attributing the current crisis to outside influences seeking to target the Meitei community.
Highlighting the crucial needs for exercising NRC in Manipur, he maintained that individuals entering Manipur after a specified base year will be considered non-citizens of the state, regardless of their community affiliation.
Somorendra added that COCOMI has been working on the line of protecting the State’s integrity and advocating the “Idea of Manipur”.
He also praised the Thadou Convention for supporting the State Government’s “War on Drugs” campaign while pointing out that certain groups and interests have tried to create a new “Golden Triangle” in and around Manipur.
Somorendra added that a large number of youths in Manipur and Northeast States have already fallen prey to drugs in the course of creating the new Golden Triangle.
