Tensions and violence rocks Churachandpur; curfew imposed

Imphal: Fresh violence rocked Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Wednesday (May 3).

Incidents of arson and clashes have been reported from parts of Manipur’s Churachandpur district.

Similar violence has been reported from Manipur’s Bishnupur valley district.

Many houses were destroyed in the violence and many people were injured.
Police shelled and fired tear gas to control the situation.

There are also reports of several people being injured in police firing.

The ATSM had called a solidarity march to “protect the interests of tribals” after the violence in Manipur’s Churachandpur district.

A march was called by the ATMS in Manipur against the demand to give ST status to Meites.
During the rally in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, unidentified miscreants set fire to several areas such as Bungmual, Singnat, Mullam and Mata Mualtam.

A few forest offices were set on fire in these areas.

Meanwhile, a complete curfew has been imposed in Manipur’s violence-hit Churachandpur district.
It is implemented under the revenue jurisdiction of Churachandpur district, particularly in Kangval, Tuibong and Churachandpur sub-divisions.
“A report has been received from the Superintendent of Police, Churachandpur that there is breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility and serious danger to human life and property in the revenue jurisdiction of Churachandpur district. It is imperative that any breach of peace and immediate prevention of disturbance of public peace and danger to human life and property.
“It is understood that the movement of any person outside their residences constitutes a breach of peace, disturbance of public tranquility and serious threat to human life and property,” the order added.
