KOHIMA: Violence was reported from Longleng district of Nagaland on Monday and Tuesday following violence in Longleng town by political parties. A complete curfew has now been imposed in the area.
Longleng Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Dharam Raj told to Media that the situation in Longleng town turned tense when rival political parties resorted to violence. However, the DC said the situation was brought under control.
While a partial curfew under Section 144 CrPC was in force in the district due to assembly elections on Monday, a complete curfew was imposed in Longleng town late on Monday.
“The curfew has been imposed to avoid any situation against peace and tranquility,” he told.
The curfew prohibits any movement of people outside their residences till 7 pm on March 1, except for enforcement of law and order, essential services, funerals with permission from the SP office.
According to videos obtained by Media, gunshots were heard and men were seen pelting stones. Local sources said that late on Monday, violent incidents broke out between BJP and NCP party workers.
Longleng Town, which falls under 50-Longling AC, witnessed violence on Monday after polling ended. Photographs obtained show damage to vehicles and broken windows.
In a video circulating on social media platforms, local people, including BJP candidate Pangyu Phom, were confronted by security personnel as they entered the polling station.
A security official can be heard saying that it is 4pm, indicating that polling will close by 4pm.
According to the Election Commission of India, people in the queue who have taken tokens are allowed to vote even after the polling time schedule.
The DC said that the authenticity of the video is being verified and action will be taken as per relevant sections under RPA and IPC as per the results.
