Kohima: The Angami Students Union (ASU) on Monday expressed concern over the shortage of teachers in government schools in Angami Naga villages under Kohima, Chumoukedima and Dimapur districts.
Addressing a press conference at its headquarters in Kohima, ASU Education Secretary Asato Paphino said that according to its latest survey covering 70 percent of the villages under its jurisdiction, shortage of teachers is a common problem facing schools. There is a problem.
She said that ASU conducted an educational campaign to research and collect data about the conditions and functioning of the schools. She said that apart from the shortage of teachers, other problems were also identified by the student body.
Some of the major problems include lack of school uniforms, lack of proper school infrastructure and inadequate classrooms.
There are 83 Angami Naga villages and more than 150 government schools in these villages, said ASU General Secretary Vimeyiekho Vitso. He urged the government to rationalize schools, and assured that ASU would cooperate with the department in this regard.
Further, he urged the department to introduce Hindi language as a linguistic subject, especially in schools under its jurisdiction. He urged the department to depute language teachers in those schools which continue to function without a language teacher despite having Tenyidie as a subject.
ASU President Khriesamhalie said that the apex student body of the Angami Naga tribe will have zero tolerance towards proxy teachers, transfer of posts and attachment of teachers to offices of legislators.
The ASU also urged the government to strictly implement its order Ref No.AR-3/Gen-174/2007 which states that appointments to Grade IV posts in district offices shall be made only to the concerned natives of the district.
