Synshar Kupar Roy Thabah of UDP wins Sohiong by-election

Shillong: UDP’s Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah, nephew of former MLA (late) HDR Lyngdoh, defeated his nearest rival NPP’s Samlin Malngiang by a margin of 3422 votes including postal votes in Meghalaya’s Sohiong seat.

The total number of votes for Thabah was 16679 while Malngiang got 13257 votes.

Counting of votes for the Sohiong by-election in Meghalaya began at 8 am on May 13 amid tight security with the UDP trending ahead in the seat.
The by-election was necessitated after the death of UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh, while assembly elections were held in Meghalaya on February 27.

A total of 6 candidates contested the 2023 elections from this seat and 91.87% votes were cast.

About 1,100 polling stations were identified as sensitive and 28 as critical.
According to the latest reports, United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Lyngdoh Thabah has won the constituency.

The United Democratic Party won the 2018 Meghalaya Assembly Elections from Sohiong constituency.

There were a total of 34,783 eligible voters in this constituency, including 17,096 male and 17,687 female voters.

The gender ratio of voters in Sohyeong in 2023 was 1,035 female voters for every 1,000 male voters.
