Student Union protest near CM residence seeks execution of NRC

Imphal: Six student organizations, led by the All Manipur Students’ Union, staged a protest in Imohal on Monday, demanding implementation of the NRC in the state and setting up of the Manipur State Population Commission.

The protesting students claimed that there had been “abnormal growth” in population in the hilly areas of Manipur, rampant cultivation of poppy and encroachment of reserve forest areas.
During the protest, the police resorted to lathi charge as angry students tried to enter the official residence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and marched to the Raj Bhawan.

According to students, the influx of outsiders from within and outside the country, including people from Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh, significantly affected Manipur’s identity, culture, economy, administration and environment.
The student organizations also demanded that Manipur trace illegal immigrants and deport them.

“We are not against any community or religion but we want to protect our land, environment and local communities from the negative effects of illegal settlements,” said the spokesperson of the student organizations.
After the Manipur Assembly passed a private member’s resolution to set up a population commission in Manipur earlier last year, the state cabinet approved the setting up of the Manipur State Population Commission.

However, the official process required for the Commission’s work is yet to begin.
