Agartala: Opposition political parties including CPIM and Congress have strongly protested against Tripura government’s decision to hike electricity rates.
Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has implemented a 5 to 7 percent increase in electricity tariffs, effective from October 01.
In response, the CPIM organized a protest rally in Agartala city on Monday, led by the party’s western district committee. Former MP and CPIM leader Shankar Prasad Dutta, along with former MLA and CPIM state committee member Pabitra Kar were among the leaders in the procession.
Referring to the significant increase in wealth tax in the Agartala Municipal Corporation area, Dutta criticized the government for increasing electricity rates without considering the impact on the people.
“Wealth tax has increased 10 to 12 times, and electricity rates have increased dramatically. These price hikes are putting a lot of pressure on the poor and middle class citizens.
Like other parts of the country, the Tripura government is also burdening its people. However, he came to power by promising to work for the people. Thus, we have organized this protest demanding the withdrawal of this decision,” Dutta said.
Meanwhile, Tripura Pradesh Congress spokesperson Parbir Chakraborty pointed out that the state government hiked electricity rates at a time when people are struggling to meet their daily needs.
“The prices of goods are skyrocketing, and the central government is silent. They seem to be busy with publicity activities. It seems they have launched an undeclared war against the people.
Electricity rates have skyrocketed, and even power-surplus states are experiencing regular load-shedding. Common people are suffering, and Tripura’s electricity meter charges are much higher than in West Bengal,” he expressed.
The Congress leader alleged that the tariff hike was an attempt to cover up the state government’s failures and acts of looting.
The Congress party demands a review of this decision in the light of the hardships of the people.
