Aizawl: At least 293 people, including 148 children from Bangladesh, have taken shelter in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district since November 20, an official said on Monday.

Ethnic Kuki-Chin or Mizo refugees fled the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) due to recent clashes between the Bangladesh Army and the Kuki-Chin National Army (KNA), an ethnic insurgent group, said refugees TT Bekhaizi. Yes, Lawngtlai District Nodal Officer of Refugees TT Beikhaizi said.
He said that there are 161 women and girls among the Bangladeshi citizens who have taken shelter in Parva-3 village.

He said that the refugees are provided temporary shelter in Parva-3 and housed in schools, a sub-health center and an Anganwadi centre.
Bekhaizi, who is a sub-divisional officer (president), said the district administration is closely monitoring the migrants.

Apart from the district administration, individuals, churches and NGOs, including the Langtlai-based Central Young Lai Association (CYLA), provided them with food and other assistance, he said.
Meanwhile, Langtlai Deputy Commissioner Amul Srivastava called a meeting with officials, NGOs and other concerned authorities on Monday to review the situation and discuss the delivery of humanitarian aid to Bangladeshi citizens, a The official statement said.

Srivastava told the meeting that the district administration had taken immediate action after learning about the arrival of people from Bangladesh, a statement issued by the state information and public relations department said.He said that continuous steps are being taken to provide shelter and relief to Bangladeshi citizens.

The Deputy Commissioner also told the meeting that the Bangladeshi nationals, who sought refuge in Mizoram, should be helped not on communal lines but on humanitarian grounds as they are human beings.He also thanked the churches, NGOs and individual donors who helped the refugees.

The official statement said that the meeting also discussed the action plan in view of possible fresh arrivals from the neighboring country.

Mizoram shares a 318 km long international border with Bangladesh.
