Sikkim: I-day football ends in brawl between Tibetan special army, IRBn

Rabong: Sikkim: I-day football ends in brawl between Tibetan special army, IRBn. A major clash broke out between the Tibetan Army Para-Special Force and IRBn jawans during the Independence Day football tournament in Rabangla on Saturday. The Tibetan army, no longer an active paraforce, now consists mostly of residents of the Rabong Tibetan settlement area in Namchi District.
The incident occurred due to disagreements at a football game, when Tibetan troops from the crowd entered the middle of the game. To defuse the situation, the Sikkim Police and the Indian Reserve Battalion deployed for the tournament tried to disperse the crowd. But unfortunately the crowd attacked the policemen.
An eyewitness said, “Tibetan Army supporters brought by the team misbehaved with the IRBn Corps personnel on duty and the Sikkim Police and the committee. The IRBn jawans were seen helpless as the crowd was huge. The Tibetan Army Rabongla has a history of causing such havoc.

When reached by the police authorities concerned, Rabong sub-division police officer Bikash Tiwari said: “Police are investigating the matter. Pushing and scuffling also took place between the supporters and the police. Injuries are reported. It was a case of the mob clashing with the policemen.
