7th edition of Amar Falcon
Guwahati: The 7th edition of Amar Falcon Festival was celebrated with a day-long program in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Monday.
The Forest Department of Manipur organised the festival to spread awareness about conservation and protection of Amur Falcon, the world’s longest flying migratory bird.
The festival is celebrated to strengthen the human-nature relationship and to recognize the importance of this small raptor in the lives of the people of the region.
Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh, Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai and Principal Chief Conservator of Forests AK Joshi attended the fair.
“This festival is celebrated to spread awareness about conservation and protection of Amur Falcon, the world’s longest flying migratory bird. They usually arrive in large numbers. Nagaland and Manipur during October. and leave in November after eating enough food for their non-stop flight to Africa,” said minister Thongam Biswajit Singh.
Tamenglong Forest Division DFO Amandeep said the festival is not just a place to celebrate but also a place where people from different backgrounds come together and exchange their views.
HT quoted DFO Amandeep as saying, “The idea is not only to promote and encourage all stakeholders in the conservation of the species, but also to educate the present generation about the immortal falcon and its wildlife. There is also a feeling of compassion.”
After the arrival of the Amur falcon in Tamenglong in the second week of October, the state forest department has started regular checking and awareness programs besides organizing joint patrols in the district.
The Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of Tamenglong and Senapati districts have issued separate orders to monitor and control poaching of wildlife in their respective districts during the deployment of Amar Falcons under the Wildlife Protection Act. 1972 are protected and included under Schedule IV.
The Amur falcon (Falco amurensis) is the world’s longest-traveling small raptor of the falcon family.
