Seeking overhaul Silsako evicted families satgea Dharna in Assam

Guwahati: More than 200 families evicted from Silsako beel held a dharna at Sachal designated protest ground in Assam’s Guwahati on Thursday demanding adequate compensation and rehabilitation of the affected families without delay.
More than 1,000 families who allegedly encroached on Salsako Beel land have been evicted by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) in a three-phase eviction drive on 13 May 2022 and 27, 28 February, 1 March 2022. . and September 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 this year.
“These families have been living in this piece of land for more than three decades. They have not issued advance notices for the eviction drive. As per the Assam Land Act, 1989 and 2019, if a family has been living for more than 15 years. If he lives in a government plot, he has to obtain land documents from the government.
But the government has denied the land rights of these local families, even though they have been living there for more than 40 to 50 years”, said Gayatri Bori, leader of Silsako Paror Ussed Pratirudhi Raij.
“During the 2021 assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that every family occupying government land will be given a land title by the government.
Unfortunately, the BJP-led government led by Chief Minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma evicted all the local families from the Silsako beel, not to mention the land belts,” Bori said.
Faced with pressure from various political and non-political organizations, the state government suspended it on September 13, after which the chief minister announced that adequate compensation would be provided to the evicted families.
But the government is adopting nepotism in providing relief to the evicted families. As per our information, 51 families each have been released Rs 5 lakh as compensation. However, GMDA officials are reluctant to give any information about the aid package. We suspect that compensation was not provided to the actual evicted families,” Bori also said.
It has been alleged that the GMDA has provided compensation to some families who are members or their relatives of a forum that is supporting the government during the eviction drive.

“The government is adopting a divisive policy in paying compensation. But we don’t want relief, we want land and rehabilitation. We have nothing to do with Rs 5 lakh compensation,” he said.
“Surprisingly, the eviction drive did not reach Hotel Ginger, Hinmatsingka’s Ideal Hill View, Maulana Badruddin Ajmal’s Hamza Properties Pvt Ltd, Prithvi Greens, Royal Plaza, Omyu Kumar Das Institute and some other organizations on the ground. are also occupying. the same area,” Bori further alleged.
About half of the 1,000 families who were forced to leave the Silsk-O-Bell area were living there before it was legally recognized as a wetland in 2008. Landlords and brokers.
Thursday’s protest rally demanded the state government to immediately rehabilitate the evicted local families and provide them adequate compensation.
The protesting people demanded the government to increase the amount given to the families who are forced to leave their homes. Currently, the government has fixed Rs 10 lakh for RCC buildings, Rs 5 lakh for AT buildings, and Rs 1.50 lakh for slums.
They also demanded the government to make public the list of evicted families who have received government compensation.
The protesters gave a letter to the Chief Minister through the police. In the letter, they sought land and compensation for the families forced to leave their homes in and around Guwahati. They want 1 kuth 5 lesa land for each family and they want compensation for the damage to their houses and property.
