Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) along with Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) on October 28 staged a protest demanding the closure of Subansiri Hydropower Project following a massive landslide in Gogamukh, Dhemaji.
The youth organisations also burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and warned of stern action if the hydropower project is not shut down.
A diversion tunnel was shut following a significant landslide on October 27, resulting in another calamity for the National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC)’s Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Power project in Assam.
On the left bank of the hydroelectric power plant, the No. 1 diversion tunnel was closed due to a significant landslip.
The water level in the project’s bottom portion has since dropped.
According to reports, eight diversion tunnels have also been blocked. Local authorities have reported that lakhs of fish have died due to the sudden drop in the water level of the Subansiri River.
