Same-sex marriages in India opposed by Assam
Guwahati: The governments of Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan have expressed their opposition to legalizing same-sex marriages in India.
The central government had sought comments from all the states on the issues raised in the same-sex marriage case before the Supreme Court, to which the states responded.
Andhra Pradesh consulted the religious heads of various religions in the state, who unanimously opposed the legalization of same-sex marriages.
Assam said legalizing same-sex marriage challenges the validity of marriage laws and personal laws in force in the state.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan said same-sex marriage would create an imbalance in the social fabric, with far-reaching consequences for the social and family system.
Although Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Sikkim also responded to the Centre’s letter, they requested more time to submit their views.
