Believe it or not, we tribal people are so inspired by nature that we have stories about every mountain, river, valley, animal and bird. It may seem superstitious at times, but some are quite sacred and require some traditional methods of appeasement and permission by performing rituals before entering their domains.
Khyarii-Satam is one such sacred mountain, named after Abang Khyari (Brother Khyari) and Satam (his shield armor, made of dried black bear skin). It is believed that according to the last wish of Khayari, his body was buried in this mountain so that no living being could reach him.
Located in the northwest of East Kameng district, the golden spectacle of the Himalayas at sunrise from Chiang Taju and Lada is breathtaking. One can see the shield / armor of the legendary Abang Khyarii-Satam or Bhai Kyari, which is actually a black rock face where there is no snowfall throughout the year.
Abang Khairi had two wives, the first Chingam Reune and the second Chingam Rowan. Abang Khyari was a great warrior and expert hunter. He used to hunt various wild animals for the family but Changum Revini was never happy with him, claiming that he was her parents’ pet. Abang Khyari was annoyed by his answer and asked the reason.
Chingam Ryone made a bet that she would be happy if he could kill Pinghi ni Selangu ga ferum tilangbo (wild boar) and Pinghi ni Silew ga Rale Yapin (giant fish).
